This is not a typical South African National Defence Force (SANDF) recruitment drive, but rather a tailored hunt for divers for the SA Navy.

Requirements for joining the South African Navy

Joining the South African Navy requires meeting certain basic requirements.

Applicants must be South African citizens, aged between 18 and 26 years old, and have at least a grade 12 certificate or equivalent qualification.

Certain positions may require specific educational qualifications.

Must be between the ages of 18 and 22 and have finished matric with pure maths.

If they are over the age of 22, they must have a tertiary qualification, but they must not be over the age of 26.

Graduates up to the age of 26 years old must have completed Grade 12 with a Degree, National Diploma, or equivalent qualification.

Additionally, applicants must be physically fit and meet the medical requirements for joining the Navy.

Application process for joining the South African Navy

The application process for joining the South African Navy involves downloading and completing the SA Navy or the SANDF application form from the Department of Defence’s official website.

Once completed, the form must be submitted to the Department of Defence, SA Navy Headquarters (Recruitment Center) Private Bag X104, Pretoria, 0001.

Applicants must also provide the required documentation, including certified copies of their ID, qualifications, and proof of residence.

The selection and training process for new recruits in the South African Navy is rigorous and involves several stages.

After submitting the application form, applicants must undergo a written examination, an interview, and a medical examination.

Successful candidates will then be subjected to a selection process that includes physical training and water activities.

Recruits are required to sign up for a period of two years during which they will receive military training and further functional training.

It is important to note that the selection process is highly competitive, and not all applicants will be successful.

Potential applicants must have swimming costumes and physical training attire (vest/T-shirt, shorts, and running shoes) as they will be subjected to physical training and water activities throughout the selection process.

They will be required to complete a 300-meter freestyle swim, a 50-meter snorkel swim, a 50-meter swim with a diving mask full of water, a 25-meter underwater swim, and a 50-meter weight-belt swim as part of their water activities.

Physical exercises will include a 2.4-kilometer run in under 13 minutes, 40 push-ups, 50 sit-ups, and seven pull-ups.

Successful candidates will go through the HR recruitment process and become part of the 2024 Military Skills Development Skills Intake.

The national recruitment campaign will stop in the Western Cape province on Monday, May 29, and Tuesday, May 30 at the SA Navy Diving School in Simon’s Town.
